Swimming & Diving Sweeps Butler on Senior Day

Muncie, Ind. - - The Ball State swimming & diving program collected a pair of wins over Butler Saturday afternoon at the Lewellen Aquatic Center, with the women (7-3) scoring a 137-86 victory and the men (2-4) posting a 135-82 win. Prior the contest, the Cardinals recognized its 14-member senior class.
The women's team claimed first-place in 15 of 16 events on the day. BSU did post the top time in the other event - - the 400 freestyle relay - - but chose to exhibition the event due to Butler's limited roster entering the meet.
The men's team scored first-place efforts in 13 of 16 events on the day. The men's team also chose to exhibition the 400 freestyle relay despite posting the top time in the event.
On the women's side, the Cardinals started off strong with Mary Brinkoetter, Brittany Mishler, Erin Johnson and Brittany Sayler winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.65.
Michelle Huang would follow with a first-place time of 11:09.28 in the 1,000 freestyle, while Erika Paul won the 200 freestyle (1:57.31) and Sayler claimed the top time in the 50 backstroke (27.97)
BSU would continue its dominance, winning the next 11 events. Claiming the top spot in event order were: Addison Del Rio (50 Breaststroke; 30.69), Dani Fisher (100 Butterfly; 1:01.08), Abby Arnold (50 Freestyle; 25.13), Paige Vernasco (1-Meter Diving; 252.83), Lauren Harger (100 Freestyle; 54.95), Huang (100 Backstroke; 1:02.46), Mishler (100 Breaststroke; 1:09.83), Kym Cossairt (500 Freestyle; 5:22.97), Erin Johnson (50 Butterfly; 27.24), Stephanie Paul (3-Meter Diving, 249.75) and Del Rio (100 IM; 59.69).
Fisher, Jenna Arnold, Alyssa Watkins and Amber Arnold would combine to post the fastest time in the 400 free relay at 3:43.84.
On the men's side, Ball State also started the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Kurtis Leer, Robert Funk, Ritchie Caudill and Josh Schum turned in a time of 1:37.18.

The 50 breaststroke was the most heated competition of the meet, as BSU seniors Caudill and Funk were vying for top billing in the event. With both swimmers determined to win, Caudill scored the victory by .01 seconds at 28.08 compared to 28.09 for Funk.
The BSU men's team would go on to win nine of the final 11 events. Scoring wins in event order were: Ian McIntosh (100 Butterfly; 54.72), Leer (50 Freestyle; 21.63), Zach Whitaker (1-Meter Diving; 303.15), Schum (100 Freestyle; 46.99), Leer (100 Backstroke; 53.86); Funk (100 Breaststroke; 1:01.43), Caudill (50 Butterfly; 24.08), Whitaker (3-Meter Diving; 296.40) and Caudill (100 IM; 53.67).
Dustin Fulkerson, Jim Lullo, Tommie Cuticchia and Schum combined to post the top-time in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:19.10.
Tracy was BSU's top finisher in the 500 freestyle, claiming second with a clocking of 5:02.11.
