Women's Swimming Posts Pair of Wins, Men's Swimming Suffers Loss at Illinois-Chicago

Chicago, Ill. - - The Ball State women's swimming and diving team (5-2; 3-1 MAC) started the 2006 portion of its schedule with a pair of victories Friday night over Illinois-Chicago (177-64) and Illinois State (169-73), while the men's team (1-3; 1-1 MAC) suffered a 139-104 setback to host Illinois-Chicago.
On the women's side, the Cardinals would take home top honors in 12 of the 13 events, only missing out in three-meter diving.
BSU started the double-dual meet with a first-place time of 1:48.80 in the 200 medley relay (Brittany Sayler, Lauren Harger, Erika Paul and Ashley VanOsdol). Meghan Patterson would follow with a time of 10:27.09 in the 1000 freestyle to take the top prize in the event.
Michelle Huang and Addison Del Rio would add a pair of individual top times in the contest, with Huang winning the in the 200 free (1:57.00) and 100 free (53.54) and Del Rio scoring victories in the 200 IM (2:09.52) and 100 breast (1:06.39).
VanOsdol would add an individual title in the 50 free (24.37), before combining with Abby Arnold, Sayler and Huang to finish the meet with a first-place effort in the 200 free relay (1:38.51).
Also scoring individual top times for the Cardinals were Stephanie Paul in one-meter diving (244.90); E. Paul in the 100 fly (58.18); Sayler in the 100 back (59.08) and
Brinkoetter in the 500 free (5:08.85).
On the men's side, Ball State took home first place in seven of the 13 events. Kyle Hembree brought home BSU's first top prize in the second event, the 1000 free (9:51.60). He would also win the 500 free (4:45.99) later in the meet.
Kurtis Leer would follow with his first of two top times in the meet, finishing the 200 free in a time of 1:42.93. He would also win the 100 free (46.56).
Adam Konopka would also score a pair of first-place efforts vs. Illinois-Chicago, winning the 200 IM (1:57.92) and the 100 back (54.05).
Zach Whitaker would win the one-meter diving event with a score of 284:60, while placing second in the three-meter event (260.85).
Both the men's and women's squad will return to action Saturday, Jan. 21 when the head to Ypsilanti, Mich., to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles at
