Three Cardinals In Top 10; Women's Golf Fourth Overall
September 19, 2005 | Women's Golf
Despite three Cardinals in the top 10 overall, the Ball State women's golf team posted a final-round team score of 316 to fall from second place entering the round and finish fourth out of 14 teams at the 2005 Cardinal Classic.
Butler managed team scores of 304 and 309 to erase a one stroke deficit and win the event Tuesday at The Player's Club in Yorktown, Ind. Ferris State, the first-round leader, finished second (303-312), while Xavier (310-307) and Ball State (304-316) rounded out the top four.
"Even though we had three players in the top 10, the results don't reflect in the overall team standings," says BSU head coach Katherine Mowat. "Kallie's second place is a great accomplishment, and Katie and Julie had good tournaments. I think we did accomplish some things and have some confidence as a group."
Individually, Kallie Harrison recorded the second-lowest score Tuesday to finish second overall out of the 82 golfers at the event. Harrison followed Monday's 74 with a 75 in the final round.
Katie Sundberg, the 2005 Mid-American Conference Medalist who posted a 75 Monday, fell from third to sixth overall with a final round 78, while Julie Harder finished ninth with a 79-76.
Amber Uphaus (76-89) tied for 45th, while Holly Jones (83-87) tied for 57th. Carmen Bodine (28 tie, 81-79), Ashley Burgess (54 tie, 86-83) and Sarah Windlan (57 tie, 85-85) all competed as individuals for the Cardinals.
"We had three good scores today," Mowat says. "Luck has a lot to do with putting a good round together, and with that, you hope for only one player to have a bad round. Unfortunately today we had two players and counting one of those scores was the difference between fourth and potentially winning the tournament."
The Cardinals return to action this weekend at the Unlimited Potential/Bay Tree Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
