Rachel Refenes Named MAC West Division Volleyball Player of the Week

Muncie, Ind. - - For her efforts in guiding the Ball State women's volleyball team to the Georgetown Hoya Classic Tournament Title, senior Rachel Refenes (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran H.S.) has been recognized as the Mid-American Conference West Division Volleyball Player of the Week. The award is Refenes' first of the season and the second of her career.
Refenes earned the Georgetown Hoya Classic Most Valuable Player Award after collecting 36 kills and 13 total blocks in the two-day event. Over the two matches - - BSU's match vs. Georgetown was cancelled after the officials failed to show up for the morning session Saturday - - and seven games, she averaged 5.14 kills and 1.86 blocks per contest. She also added six digs, two service aces and two assists.
In BSU's first contest of the tournament versus Central Connecticut, Refenes paced the Cardinals with 17 kills, while her seven total blocks and .438 (17-3-32) attack percentage were match bests. She also posted three digs, an ace and an assist against the Blue Devils.
On Saturday, Refenes collected a match-best 19 kills and a .415 (19-2-41) attack percentage versus Yale, while producing a match-high six total blocks. She also tallied three digs, an ace and an assist against the Bulldogs.
With her 36 kills on the weekend, Refenes moved her career total to 999. The transfer from Mississippi has smashed 452 kills since joining the Cardinals last season. In her previous two seasons at Ole Miss, she collected 547 kills.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will put its 12-match Worthen Arena winning streak on the line Wednesday, when it hosts Butler at 7 p.m. BSU will then have the weekend off before traveling to IPFW Tuesday, Sept. 20, for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Mastodons.
