VERMILLION, S.D. -- Jason Mahowald, an assistant swimming coach at Ball State University (Muncie, Ind.) since August 2003, has been named the head swimming coach for the men's and women's programs at The University of South Dakota, according to an announcement by USD Athletics Director Joel Nielsen.
Mahowald, originally of Hastings, Minn., was hired to replace Ron Allen, who resigned earlier this spring. Mahowald will start his duties at USD on July 1.
"We are pleased that Jason has agreed to take over our swimming program," said Nielsen. "He grew up in Minnesota, attended college in Wisconsin and plans to recruit from a Midwestern base. Jason brings an energetic and enthusiastic approach to this position and has a variety of experiences. He's excited about getting started at USD and continuing its winning tradition."
Mahowald was a graduate assistant at Ball State where he conducted workouts, arranged travels needs, and served as a recruiter for the program. He has served as an assistant swim camp director (2004) at Ball State and was the Longhorn Swim Camp Coach at the University of Texas (2001, 2003) where he worked with Olympic Coach Eddie Reese and World Championship Coach Jill Sterkel.
From 2002-03, Mahowald was the head middle distance coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he coached six Division III All-Americans. Mahowald was the Swimming and Diving Championship Meet director for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (2003). He also was the head masters' swim coach for the Stevens Point-Area YMCA.
Mahowald earned a business administration degree from Wisconsin-Stevens Points (2002) and received a Master's degree in sports administration from Ball State (2005). A four-year letter winner, Mahowald was a swimming and diving team captain at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. While in high school, he was a national top-16 swimmer for the Hastings-Area Swim Team.
He and his fiancée, Melanie Luke (Stillwater, Minn.), will relocate to Vermillion this summer.
