Softball Places Two on Academic All-MAC Team

Ball State senior softball players Amy Brownfield (Pueblo, Colo./Centennial H.S.) and Alyssa Huffman (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg H.S.) have been selected to the 2005 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Softball Team as selected by the league's 13 faculty athletic representatives. Both student-athletes are first-time recipients of the honor. The Cardinals' two choices tie for the second-most among league schools.
A four-year letterwinner, Brownfield made a team-leading 36 appearances on the mound this spring. She topped the team with career-high marks in appearances, games started (25), complete games (19), shutouts (2), innings pitched (191.1), strikeouts (117) and ERA (2.60) plus tied for first with eight victories. She ranked among MAC leaders in six statistical categories. In league games only, Brownfield tallied a 1.63 ERA to place fourth among statistical leaders. She struck out a career-high 10 batters in 11.2 innings of work against Toledo April 3 and accumulated seven or more strikeouts on four occasions. Two of Brownfield's victories came at the expense of then 32nd-ranked Central Michigan and eventual MAC Tournament Champion Miami. In addition, she posted a .988 fielding percentage with just one miscue in 82 total chances.
Brownfield concluded her career with 13 victories, 168 strikeouts, 37 games started, 21 complete games and 79 appearances over 319.2 innings of work. She registered a .979 fielding percentage with 10 putouts and 128 assists.
A three-time member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll, Brownfield received her bachelor's degree earlier this month after compiling a 3.39 grade-point average as a criminal justice major.
A starter in 54 of Ball State's 56 games this season, Huffman compiled a .222 batting average with 38 hits, including a pair of doubles. Her 16 runs scored tied for fourth, while her five stolen bases were second on the squad. From her shortstop position, Huffman accumulated 110 putouts and 124 assists for a .925 fielding percentage. In 22 Mid-American Conference games, she hit .232 with 16 hits plus tallied a .951 fielding percentage with 59 putouts and 58 assists.
A three-year letterwinner, Huffman joined the Ball State softball program as a manager in 2002. She earned a reserve spot on the team in 2003 and was a full-time starter in each of her final two seasons.
Huffman, who was recently honored with her selection to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Softball Second Team, is a three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete, a three-time member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll, a two-time recipient of a MAC Commissioner's Award for Academic Excellence and a 2005 recipient of a MAC Presidential Award for Academic Excellence. A special education major with a team-leading 3.84 grade-point average, Huffman has completed all course work and will do her student teaching this coming fall.
