MAC Round Two - Final Results (Round 3 Cancelled)
Extreme weather conditions forced the cancellation of the final round of the 2005 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships at Walden Ponds Golf Course in Hamilton, Ohio.
Therefore, Ball State junior Katie Sundberg, who managed the second-lowest round of round two with a 77, earned medalist honors with a one shot victory over Western Michigan's Jenna Walter. Sundberg, who was also named to the All-MAC First Team, managed a 72-77=149 to claim medalist honors, while Walter tallied a 75-75=150 to finish second.
Kent State, which has won every MAC Women's Golf title in the league's history, won its sixth straight team title with a 287-323=610. Ohio was second with a 300-323=623, Western Michigan was third at 304-326=630 and Ball State finished fourth with a 303-329=632.
Ball State's fourth place finish was the best in the school's brief history in women's golf. The Cardinals reinstated women's golf in 2001 and placed eighth out of eight teams in the conference championships. In 2002, BSU was eighth of eight teams, but moved up to seventh out of nine teams in 2003. Last year, the Cardinals placed sixth in the nine team field.
Sundberg's individual medalist honors marked the first time in the six-year history of the MAC Women's Golf Championships that a Kent State player did not win the event. Sundberg's 149 was three strokes better than the top KSU player, Tara Delaney, who finished fourth with a 71-81=152. Kent State's top four individuals placed fourth, sixth, seventh and seventh in the two-round tournament.
Sundberg's 72 in round one Friday tied for the fourth best first round score in the tournament, while her second day 77 was one of only six sub-80 rounds in very difficult weather conditions.
Ball State's Julie Harder (76-82=158) tied for 12th, Carmen Bodine (76-85=161) tied for 20th, Chelsie Flannery (79-85=164) tied for 26th and Holly Jones (88-96=184) finished 45th.
Joining Sundberg on the All-MAC First Team were Karen Delaney, Gabby Wedding and Becky Wood of Kent State, Natalie Storck of Toledo and Amber Churchill of Marshall.
Kent State head coach Mike Morrow was named the MAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in six years, and Wedding was named the MAC Golfer of the Year for a second straight season. Delaney was named the MAC Freshman of the Year, and Tammy Mahar of Marshall was named the MAC Sportswoman of the Year.
