Day 2 Results from the IUPUI House of Champions
Indianapolis, Ind. - - The Ball State swimming & diving program carried over its dominance from Friday evening, completing a sweep of the IUPUI House of Champions Saturday evening. The women's program capture the title with 930 points for a 171-point margin of victory, while the men's program took home top honors with 771 points for a 153-point edge.
On the women's side, the Cardinals took the top spot, followed by Northern Colorado (759), Western Illinois (539), Eastern Illinois (421), IUPUI (288), Valparaiso (245) and Butler (174).
On the men's side, Ball State earned the No. 1 spot, followed by IUPUI (618), Eastern Illinois (603), Western Illinois (458), Valparaiso (458) and Butler (181).
After winning all six events on the opening day of competition, the Ball State women's squad tallied first-place efforts in 12 of the final 14 events Saturday. BSU's top finisher in the other two events placed second.
BSU started the day with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:48.50) by Brittany Sayler, Addison Del Rio, Erika Paul and Ashley VanOsdol.
Mary Brinkoetter would follow with the top-time in the 400 IM (4:37.19), while Meghan Patterson would place second (4:40.81) and Megan Ploetz (4:44.50) would come in fourth.
Paul would take top honors in the 100 butterfly with a clocking of 58.98, while Michelle Huang would place second in the 200 free (1:58.19). Dani Fisher (1:59.11) and Brittany Mishler (1:59.30) would place fourth and fifth, respectively in the 200 free.
Del Rio would put the Cardinals back on the top of the podium with a time of 1:05.62 in the 100 breaststroke, which is the third-fastest individual clocking in school annals. Lauren Harger (1:08.23) would finish third in the event.
Sayler would follow by swimming to a time of 58.06 to win the 100 backstroke. She was the only swimmer of the 21 entered in the event to break one minute.
After the 100 backstroke, the competition would turn to the three-meter diving boards, where Stephanie Paul (261.20) and Valerie McGowan (234.90) went 1-2.
Back in the lanes, BSU's 800 free relay squad - - Brinkoetter, Huang, Patterson and Fisher - - would take second, while Patterson claimed the top-spot in the 1,650 free with a time of 17:43.77. Mishler would place fifth (18:24.45) in the event.
In the 200 backstroke, Sayler would take top honors with a time of 2:05.26, while Brinkoetter placed second with a swim of 2:08.24.
Huang would collect first in the 100 free with a clocking of 53:34, while VanOsdol finished third with a time of 53:65.
Del Rio would post her second individual first-place effort on the day in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.61, while Bekah Gingerich turned in a fourth-place time of 2:29.76.
Plotz would collect the No. 1 slot in the 200 fly, scoring a time of 2:09.64, while E. Paul placed third in the event with a clocking of 2:12.33.
Sayler, VanOsdol, Huang and Brinkoetter closed out the event with a first-place time of 3:36.32 in the 400 free relay.
The Ball State men's program - - who won three of six events on the opening day - - would capture the top spot in four of the final 14 events Saturday.
BSU would open the day with a first-place showing in the 200 medley relay (1:37.13) by Adam Konopka, Ryan Franklin, Ritchie Caudill and Tyler McQuiston.
Konopka would go on to win the next event - - the 400 IM - - with a time of 4:11.60, while Kyle Hembree would clock in at the No. 2 slot with a time of 4:19.68.
Cameron Taylor was BSU's top finished in the 100 butterfly, placing 11th with a time of 56.36.
BSU would not stay out of the top 10 for long, as Kurtis Leer paced the field in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.87.
Caudill and Franklin would follow with a 1-2 punch in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 59.82 and 1:00.39, respectively. Brett Pettit would follow with a fourth-place effort in the 100 backstroke (54.26).
On the one-meter diving board, Zach Whitaker would place third with 265.70 points, while Caleb Bye earned fifth with 244.05 points.
In the next two events, BSU's 800 freestyle relay team would swim home in second as Leer, Hembree, Konopka and Jim Lullo posted a time of 7:10.34, while Hembree came in second (16:44.58) and Lullo brought home fourth (17:00.43) in the 1,650 freestyle.
Konopka would follow with a first-place time of 1:54.00 in the 200 backstroke, with Pettit swimming to fourth-place with a time of 1:59.30.
In the 100 free, Leer would take home top honors with a time of 47.82 and McQuiston would pull in third with a clocking of 48.39.
Caudill would place second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:10.94, while Ryan Franklin would clock a fifth-place time of 2:15.14.
Danny Tracy would be the team's best finisher in the 200 butterfly, recording a ninth-place time of 2:08.19.
The Cardinals would conclude the meet with a second-place showing in the 400 freestyle relay by Leer, Caudill, McQuiston and Pettit (3:15.57).
The men's and women's squad will close out the 2005 portion of its schedule next Saturday with a
