Swimming & Diving Falls to Michigan State

Muncie, Ind. - - The Ball State men's and women's swimming & diving teams both suffered setbacks to Michigan State Saturday afternoon at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. The men's team(1-2; 1-1 Mid-American Conference) dropped the meet 128-115, while the women's team (3-2, 3-1 MAC) suffered a 137-106 loss.
The men's team finished the day with seven first-place efforts in the 13 events, while the women's squad scored top times in six of 13 events.
Kurtis Leer paced the men's side with a pair of first-place efforts on the day, capturing top honors in the 200 free (1:43.68) and the 100 free (47.97).
Jagan Arnold would take the top spot in the men's 50 free (22.02), while Leer, Arnold, Dustin Fulkerson and Robert Funk combined to win the 200 free relay (1:28.37) giving the Cardinals top honors in four of the six men's freestyle events.
Zach Whitaker would outscore the competition on the three-meter diving board by posting 269.32 points, while Caleb Bye placed first on the one-meter board with a score of 272.77.
Ritchie Caudill would round out the men's first-place finishers with a clocking of 2:13.04 in the 200 breaststroke.
On the women's side, Meghan Patterson gave the Cardinals their first top time, with a clocking of 10:28.20 in the 1,000 free. Patterson would also win the 500 free with a time of 5:10.73.
Michelle Huang would follow with a first-place time of 1:56.98 in the 200 free and Ashley VanOsdol would capture the 50 free with an effort of 24.65.
Amber Arnold and Brittany Sayler rounded out the Cardinals first-place finishers with victories in the 200 fly (2:08.83) and 200 back (2:06.77), respectively.
Both the Ball State men's and women's squads will return to action Jan. 13, when the teams visit Illinois-Chicago for a 5 p.m. start. The Illinois State's women's squad will also be participating in the event.
