MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State men's tennis coach Bill Richards announced today the addition of Bret Berryman to the 2006-07 squad. Berryman will join the Cardinals next fall.
"Bret is the only player we had in for a visit this fall," said Richards. "We are very forunate in attaining Bret from the Kansas City area. He was an unknown going into summer competition, yet I watched him throughout the season and he ended up having great results. Scouting services rank him as the 64th-best senior in the nation."
A Blue Springs, Mo. native, Berryman advanced to the finals of the St. Louis Gateway Tournament in early November. He plays No. 1 singles at Blue Springs South High School where he earned all-metro and all-state honors as a junior. Additionally, he finished second in the district last season.
Berryman competes for the Mike Wolf Tennis Academy where he is coached by Elliott McDermed. He is currently ranked second in the Missouri Valley and 72nd nationally in the 18 and under age group.
"We made a big push for him in the summer and fall and got an early committment," Richards continues. "Bret is still developing. He was a late bloomer. All his best tennis is still in front of him and if he were on our team right now, he would have an excellent chance of being in the lineup. He loves to play all the time and works hard at it. He is going to be a real solid player for us in the future."
