Men's Volleyball Scores 3-1 Win in Alumni Match

Under the booming voice of public address announcer Steve Shondell (1974-77) - - currently the head coach at Burris H.S. in Muncie, Ind. - - junior Luis Castera (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Rosa-Bell H.S.) paced the Cardinals' attack with 13 kills on a .316 (
Junior Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) also turned in double-figure kill totals in the match, with 10. He finished the contest with a .286 (
Redshirt sophomore Doug Willman (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North H.S.) paced all players with a 1.000 attack percentage, smashing kills on all four of his swings. Fifth-year senior Zoran Grabovac (Des Moines, Iowa/Hoover H.S.) also turned in solid attack numbers, slamming seven kills on nine attempts for a .777 rate of success. Both players scored three blocks and a dig.
Redshirt freshmen Ryan Clarke (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South H.S.) and Mark Termion (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) also found success against the alumni defense, scoring eight and seven kills, respectively. Defensively, the pair combined for eight digs and four blocks, with Termion scoring seven digs to Clarke's one. Each had two blocks on the night.
Seniors Dave Carlson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids H.S.) and Evan Berg (Bristol, Wis./Central H.S.) both added four kills, while Carlson tallied seven digs and two blocks and Berg had six digs.
Also aiding in the win were junior Mark Rumschik (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park H.S.) with three kills and seven digs and sophomore Ted Summers-Torres (San Diego, Calif./University of San Diego) with two digs.
Meyer added a pair of service aces in the contest, while Castera, Termion and Torres posted one each.
On the alumni side, Kyle Weindel (2000-03) led the team with a match-high 16 kills on 28 attempts, while posting a .393 (
Josh Hall (2000-03) totaled four kills and a .182 (
Defensively, Josh Lee (2001-03) played the libero position for the alumni, while Darrell Morken (1984-85) was the team's defensive specialist.
Current BSU assistant coach Kevin Furnish (1989-91) served as the alumni's coach and inspirational leader on the bench.
For the game, Ball State posted a .528 (65-17-41) hitting percentage, while holding the alumni team to .224 (42-24-106) mark.
