Riley competed in track and field at Ball State from 1998-2002 and was an NCAA All-American in the hammer throw in 2001 and 2002. Riley placed seventh at the 2002 NCAA Championships with a throw of 212'-2”, and his throw of 215'-11” in a meet at Indiana that season set a Ball State outdoor school record. He became only the second track and field student-athlete in Ball State history to earn All-America First Team honors.
In addition, Riley was a 2002 Academic All-American. He earned a bachelor's and master's degree from Ball State plus a doctorate from Colorado. An assistant professor at IUPUI, Riley was a three-time MAC Champion in the hammer throw and qualified for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials after graduation.
