Overman was a two-year letterman in football, two-year letterman in track, plus earned one letter in baseball at Ball State in his athletic career from 1941 through 1946. In football, Overman was named to the All-Little State First-Team in 1945 after earning Second-Team honors in 1942 as a sophomore. He helped the football team to a 6-2 record in 1942 and a 4-1-1 mark in 1945. In track, he won the Little State javelin throw in 1945 and 1946. In baseball, Overman was a regular on the baseball team as a third baseman.
After his 1946 graduation from BSU, Overman began a coaching and teaching career that spanned 40 years, including 31 years of coaching football, which 29 of those were at the high school level. He tallied a 201-108 career high school coaching mark, including undefeated seasons in 1946, 1953, and 1973. His 1978 team lost its opening game before winning 11 straight and advancing to the Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 2A State Finals.
