Stealy accumulated nine letters in football, basketball, and track at Ball State between 1938 and 1941, earning all-state honors on both the gridiron and hardwood in addition to setting several field event marks in track.

He later served as the Cardinals’ head basketball coach for four years, track for 13 seasons, and cross country for eight campaigns along with assistant football coach for ten years.
