Heaton lettered in four sports at Ball State from 1944 to 1950 and is the only Cardinal athlete to ever receive five letters in basketball. A five-year regular for the BSU basketball team, the Muncie Burris product set a scoring record of 1,186 points, a total that still ranks with the best on the university’s all-time career list. Heaton also started for the BSU football and baseball teams prior to entering the army and played number-three singles on the tennis team after his return to the university.
