O’Connell, a four-year letterman on Ball State’s football team as a quarterback and punter, helped the Cardinals to a 33-11 overall record, a 22-6 Mid-American Conference mark and league championships in 1976 and 1978 in his career. After his senior campaign, he was named to the All-MAC First-Team for the third time in his four seasons plus was selected the MAC’s Offensive Player of the Year and received honorable mention on The Associated Press All-America team. As a quad-captain on the 1978 team, O’Connell won the John V. Magnabosco Award as BSU’s Most Valuable Player after quarterbacking the team to its only undefeated league mark in the school’s history.
