Sparks was a three-year letterman in both track and cross country at Ball State. He earned All-America honors in 1967 when he finished third in the 880-yard run at the National Collegiate Athletic Association College Division Championships and twice was selected as the Indiana Collegiate Conference’s Most Valuable Trackman.
Sparks collected AAU All-America honors seven times as a member of the Chicago Track Club’s Word Record-setting two-mile relay team.
