Rains lettered two seasons in track and four years in swimming for Ball State and led the Cardinals to their first-ever Little State Swimming Championship as a junior. He lettered in swimming in 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1950, plus earned varsity awards in track in 1949 and 1950. He was a conference champion in swimming in 1949 and won league titles in track in 1949 and 1950.
