Shoemaker lettered in cross country and track for the Cardinals from 1973 to 1977. He won the 1977 MAC steeplechase championship and qualified for the 1977 NCAA Track Championships plus the 1975 NCAA Cross Country Championships. As a senior, Shoemaker helped Ball State to its first-ever MAC cross country title. He was a three-time track and two-time cross country Most Valuable Performer for BSU.
