Adams, a two-year letterman in football for the Cardinals in 1947 and 1948, guided Michigan City Elston High School basketball teams to 394 victories against 111 losses between 1957 and 1977. His 1966 Elston quintet won the state championship, while three of his teams were ranked number one at the end of the regular season.
