McClain compiled a 46-25-3 record in seven seasons at the BSU football helm, including a 26-7 overall mark and a 13-4 MAC ledger in his final three years with the Cardinals. He guided Ball State to its first MAC football crown in 1976 and sent seven of his BSU players to the NFL. McClain then managed a 46-42-3 mark and three bowl berths in eight seasons as head football coach at the University of Wisconsin prior to his death in 1986 at the age of 48. The Big Ten’s Coach-of-the-Year Award is named in McClain’s honor.
