Ball State’s 1978 football team won the Mid-American Conference championship under the tutelage of head coach Dwight Wallace for the program’s second league title in three years. The Cardinals managed a 10-1 overall record, marking the first 10-win season in program history, and an unblemished 8-0 markx in the MAC. Ball State ranked first in the nation in scoring defense, third in total defense and fifth in rushing defense. The Cardinals limited opponents to 7.4 points per game and posted four shutouts. Ken Kremer (third team) and Bill Stahl (honorable mention) earned AP All-America recognition. Ball State featured four All-MAC first team selections, including Kremer as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Wallace was named the MAC Coach of the Year.
