Ray Holmes joined the Ball State football program in January of 2024 as the team's inside receivers coach.
He came to Ball State after serving three years under Mike Uremovich on the Butler coaching staff. Counting stops at Northern Illinois and Temple, Ball State is the fourth program in which Holmes has coached under Uremovich.
Holmes arrived at Butler in January of 2022 as the team’s wide receiver coach. He was promoted to the program's pass game coordinator in 2023, serving in that capacity has last two seasons with the Bulldogs.
Holmes helped a freshman emerge as the top target for the Bulldogs in 2023, with Ethan Loss leading the team with 41 receptions and 515 receiving yards. In 2024, Loss and teammate Luke Wooten paired to give the Bulldogs a top-20 receiving duo in the Pioneer Football League, with Wooten nabbing team highs with 36 catches for 620 yards.
Loss and Wooten both earned All-PFL accolades during their tenure under Holmes. Another standout under Holmes' tutelage was Tyler Adams who was invited to the Indianapolis Colts' rookie minicamp following the 2022 campaign.
Before arriving at Butler, Holmes coached at Temple as an offensive graduate assistant. He joined the Owls in the 2020 summer. Holmes kicked off his coaching career at Northern Illinois where he spent four years working as a student assistant. At NIU, Holmes primarily worked with the running backs while obtaining a bachelor’s degree in advocacy and public communication.
A native of Evergreen Park, Illinois, Holmes earned his master’s degree in higher education at Temple in spring 2022.
