Tucker Bitting, an accomplished club coach and former volunteer assistant at the University of Notre Dame, enters his third season as an assistant coach for the Ball State women's volleyball program in 2024.
In his first two seasons, Bitting has helped guide the Cardinals to a 41-24 overall record, including a 28-8 mark in Mid-American Conference play. His work on staff helped Ball State claim a share of the 2022 Mid-American Conference regular season title and earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. In addition, the Cardinals earned a bid into the 2023 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) where it advanced to the second round.
“I’m so excited to have Tucker on staff,” Phillips said. “He brings a high volleyball IQ, passion for the game, and a competitive mindset that will continue to push our program forward. He understands the value of teaching the game, as well as connecting with the players to help each person in the program develop to become the best version of themselves. I cannot wait to get back in the gym and get started with this new crew!”
His worked helped the Cardinals finish the 2022 season as one of the nation's top offensive and defensive programs, with Ball State ranking 13th nationally in kills (1,725) and fifth nationally in digs (2,206). BSU's attackers also finished the 2022 campaign ranked 43rd among the 332 ranked NCAA Division I programs with a .250 team attack percentage.
The 2023 campaign saw the Cardinals rank 54th nationally with a .245 hitting mark, led by middle Marie Plitt who was 24th among all NCAA Division I players with her .396 rate of success.
Bitting is no stranger to the Muncie volleyball scene, spending the past four seasons and eight years overall, as a coach for the nationally renowned Munciana Volleyball Club. He is also a 2011 graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in general studies and minors in coaching and psychology.
“I am thankful and excited for the opportunity to be a part of the Ball State volleyball program.” Bitting said. “Kelli has done a tremendous job of building Ball State into a perennial powerhouse in the MAC, and I am thrilled to be able to return to my alma mater and help this program win championships!”
This past summer, Bitting led his 16-Open Moana team to a fifth-place finish at the AAU Junior Nationals held in Orlando, Florida. His Moana squad also earned runner-up finishes at several major tournaments, including the Bluegrass national qualifier and the JVA World Challenge, as well as a top-20 finish at the Triple Crown Invite.
Prior to his success in Muncie this past season, Bitting coached from 2018-2021 at Munciana’s sister club in Indianapolis, leading his 15-Open and 16-Open teams to numerous strong tournament finishes.
Before his most recent stint as a coach at Munciana, Bitting was a volunteer assistant coach at Notre Dame for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, helping catapult a Fighting Irish squad from a 7-25 mark in 2015 to back-to-back 22-10 records in his two seasons on staff. In addition, the 2017 squad earned an at large berth into the NCAA Championship.
While on UND’s staff, Bitting worked with a defense which finished the 2017 season leading the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 18.17 digs-per-set average and held opponents to a league-low .156 attack percentage. He also helped develop Notre Dame’s serving game, with the squad ranking first in the ACC and eighth nationally with a 1.57 aces-per-set average in 2016.
Prior to his time in South Bend, Bitting started his coaching career with his first stint at Munciana. As a head coach, he led the 16-National Cardinals to a 67-8 record in 2015 and the team to the 2015 AAU 16 Club National Championship and wins at the JVA World Challenge, Bluegrass national qualifier, and Lakeshore Volleyfest.
Bitting also coached alongside Wes Lyon to help guide the 14-Open squad to a fifth-place finish at the 2014 AAU National tournament, as well as assisting Phil Leswing and the 13-Open team to an 11th-place showing at the 2013 AAU National tournament.
Bitting and his wife, Megan, currently reside in Pendleton with their son, Reid, and daughter Remy.
