A tireless recruiter and experienced gymnastics coach on all levels, Scott Wilson is entering his fifth season at Ball State in the fall of 2020.
When he came to BSU in 2016, head coach Joanna Saleem said, “I am very excited to have Scott join the Cardinal Gymnastics family. He brings a wealth of high level gymnastics knowledge that will continue to support the success we have built and he shares my expectations for creating a positive competitive environment for our student-athletes."
In four years at Ball State, Wilson has been the lead recruiter and filled the program with talented gymnasts and successful students. In 2020, the Cardinals had a record-setting season that saw the school record for meet score broken three different times. The team outscored 11 of its 15 opponents on the year, its best winning percentage in nearly 20 years.Â
The 2019 season - Wilson's third year in Muncie - was one of the program's best in recent history. The Cardinals won 10 dual meets and placed three athletes (including two freshmen) in the NCAA Regional. The team also set a school record on vault in February 2019 against Western Michigan.
During the 2018 season, Wilson's bar squad saw a season high of 49.025. Top bar scorers Jordyn Penny and Maddie Macdonald lead the team throughout the season consistently scoring a 9.825 or better on the event.
In his first season, Wilson led the uneven bar team to an event record of 49.125 at the Mid-American Conference Championships held at Bowling Green. Wilson also fostered four athletes into the record book with scores of 9.850 respectively.Â
Prior to Ball State, Wilson spent eight years as an assistant gymnastics team coach at Team Attraction Gymnastics located in Apex, N.C. Under the direction of head coach Monica Ward, Wilson designed and implemented competitive curriculums for over 100 athletes ranging from compulsory to optional level of expertise. He also served as the primary liaison between NCAA programs and his athletes.
Wilson is very active in the sport. In 2015, he acted as a North Carolina USA gymnastics state congress clinician, where he developed and delivered solutions to challenges involving the transitions from lower to higher-level gymnastics. In the same year, he was an elected board member of the North Carolina USA gymnastics. Wilson aided in coordinating state and regional competitions and clinics.Â
Wilson earned his bachelor’s degree in American History from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010. He was a student assistant for the Tar Heels as an undergrad under head coach Derek Galvin.Â
