Jessie DeZiel enters her third year as an assistant coach for Ball State's gymnastics team, primarily coaching floor while assisting with beam and vault.
In her first year she guided the floor team to an all time high score of 49.500. The Cardinals posted a season high team score of 195.450 during its win against Western Michigan and University of Illinois-Chicago. Sydney Finke, Kayla Beckler and Kaitlyn Menzione entered the Ball State record book with scores of 9.925. All three athletes tied for first place on floor.Â
During DeZiel's second season with the Cardinals she lead the floor squad to a season high of 49.325. Freshman, Tia Kiaku broke through as one of the top scorers for the Cardinals scoring two 9.900 throughout the season and earning herself a spot to compete at the NCAA Columbus Regional competition.Â
DeZiel is a graduate from the University of Nebraska and earned a B.S., Nutrition Exercise and Health Science in 2016. She was a member of the Nebraska gymnastics coaching staff for one season as a volunteer coach, focusing on beam and helping the Huskers to an eight place finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships. As a student-athlete at UNL, she was an All-Around gymnast from 2012-2015. Throughout her career DeZiel scored career highs on vault (9.975- 4 times), bars (9.925- 5 times), beam (9.925- 2 times), floor (9.950- 2 times) and all-around (39.675- vs Iowa). DeZiel ended her career as a nine-time All-American, totaling 61 career titles and hitting 206 of 207 routines.
In 2015, DeZiel claimed many accolades, the Big Ten conferences's most exclusive award, the Big Ten Medal of Honor, Nebraska's Female Student-Athlete of the Year and she was a finalist for the AAI Gymnastics Award recognizing the most outstanding college senior.
DeZiel was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection along with the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2012. Before her collegiate career she was a 2011 USA Team Member and competed at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico where she led Team USA to gold.
DeZiel is from Rogers, Minnesota and is the daughter of Craig and Jean DeZiel. Her sister, Brittany DeZiel is one year older and also competed as a collegiate gymnast.
