Ball State University Athletics
COMPLIANCE REMINDERS - June 7, 2021
When considering transferring, there should never be direct recruiting occurring between a student-athlete (or anyone on behalf of the student-athlete) and any institutions’ coaches before that individual has officially entered the transfer portal.
This impermissible communication is called tampering. Tampering occurs when a coach at a different institution attempts to “poach” a student-athlete from another four-year institution. Current NCAA rules dictate that a tampering violation could be a Level 2 violation by the second institution’s coach, considering it a significant breach of conduct. This level of violation could mean severe penalties for a coach and program including coaching suspensions, recruiting penalties, scholarship reductions, as well as any financial penalty and probation for the institution.
Ball State coaches and student-athletes are encouraged to follow NCAA guidelines and ask questions when needed to help facilitate a seamless transfer that best sets up the student-athletes for long-term success.

NCAA Transfer Portal and Tampering
Since the introduction of the NCAA Transfer Portal during the 2018-19 academic year, thousands of student-athletes have transitioned between schools and had a successful transfer. Once a student-athlete talks to his or her coach(es) and contacts the compliance office to be entered into the portal, the student-athlete will be added and is “live” in the system. Once the student-athlete receives an automated update from the NCAA to the email they provided on their Notification of Transfer form, he or she is viewable by other NCAA institutions’ coaches. When considering transferring, there should never be direct recruiting occurring between a student-athlete (or anyone on behalf of the student-athlete) and any institutions’ coaches before that individual has officially entered the transfer portal.
