Field Hockey Suffers First Loss of the Season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Ball State field hockey team was handed its first loss of the season in a 1-0 defeat against the Richmond Spiders Saturday afternoon. The loss comes just one day after a thrilling overtime win against Brown.
Emma Johansson’s goal for Richmond (2-1) came early in the first half and was the only score of the day.
The Cards, who have won their previous three games, took five shots on goal, but couldn’t connect. Abbey Main, Merinda Morley and Michelle Shampton were the three Cardinals with shot attempts. Morley led the team with three attempts.
Senior goalkeeper Jordan Dues had five saves on the day and the only goal she allowed came when Johansson struck from the left side of the circle.
Richmond won the 2015 Atlantic 10 regular season title.
The Cardinals are in action again with two games next weekend in Evanston, Ill. Ball State will take on Northwestern Friday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. The Cards will then face Colgate in a neutral site game on Saturday, Sept. 10 at noon.
