Women's Golf Closes Golfweek Red Sky Classic by Tying Program Record

WOLCOTT, Colo. - - For the second time in a little over a week, the Ball State women's golf team closed an event with a program record single-round score of -7 (281).
The effort in the final round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic Wednesday afternoon helped the Cardinals finish 14th among the highly talented 20-team field on the Fazio Course of the Red Sky Golf Club.
Overall, Ball State shot +9 (873) over its three rounds on the 6,383-yard course, in an event won by Golfweek Preseason No. 2 USC at -47 (814). Miami (Fla.) finished second, 14 strokes back of USC at -33 (831).
"This was a great experience for our youthful team," head coach Cameron Andry said. "Competing with some of the best teams in the country is a wonderful opportunity and a great learning experience!"
In its run to a second-straight closing round of -7 (281), all four countable scores finished at-or-blow par. Leading Wednesday's effort was junior Sophie Korthuijs who finished the day with a career-low round of -4 (68). Korthuijs tied for the team lead with five birdies on the day, including a stretch of three in four holes midway through her round.
With the effort, Korthuijs climbed 19 spots up the final leaderboard, tying for 59th overall at +3 (219).
Taylor Larkins continued her impressive freshman season, closing the event with a round of -2 (70), helping her finish tied for 26th overall at -4 (212). It is the lowest 54-hole score of her young career, two strokes better than her winning effort at the Brittany Kelly Classic.
Larkins carded four more birdies in her final round, raising her tournament total to 17. The effort led all Mid-American Conference golfers in the event, which also included Golfweek Preseason #20 Eastern Michigan, and was tied for fifth among the 108-player field.
Sophomore Ashley Kirkland also went sub-par in her final tour of the Fazio Course, shooting -1 (71). Her scorecard included five birdies and 10 pars, helping her finish the event tied for 34th at -2 (214). The 54-hole score tied as the lowest of her collegiate career.
Rounding out Ball State's countable scores Wednesday was an E (72) from sophomore Skylar Dean. The effort was her lowest round of the event and included 16 pars and one birdie. In fact, after a bogey on her second hole, Dean recorded 14 straight pars before registering a birdie on the par 4, 354-yard 11th.
Freshman Elizabeth Coleman also turned in a strong effort, finishing at +4 (76) to tie her lowest round of the event. Coleman's final round included four birdies.
"We got better each day and finished with a great round," Andry added. "It was awesome to see us get three players in the red today and fire a nice team round!"
The Ball State women's golf team returns to action Saturday with the first two rounds of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Invitational on the Warren Golf Course in South Bend.
