Larkins, Kirkland Lead Day Two Charge on Fazio Course

WOLCOTT, Colo. - - Led by a second career-low round of -4 (68) from freshman Taylor Larkins Tuesday, the Ball State women's golf team moved two spots up the leaderboard on the second day of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on the Fazio Course at the Red Sky Golf Club.
For the second straight day, the Cardinals finished with its lowest team round ever on the 6,383-yard course, this time shooting +4 (292). The effort, which was the 11th-lowest team round of the day, moved BSU to +16 (592) over the first two rounds and into a tie for 15th with UC Irvine among the 20-team field.
"That was a very solid round for us," head coach Cameron Andry said. "Taylor turned in another stellar performance. She's just taking care of her business and doing all the little things well. She's playing with maturity well beyond her years."
USC, the No. 2 team in the nation in the Golfweek preseason rankings, still leads the event at -33 (543), followed by Miami (Fla.) in second at -18 (558) and No. 5 Texas A&M in third at -17 (559).
Larkins, who also carded a -4 (68) in her second round of last week's Brittany Kelly Classic (Sept. 14-15), wrote down seven more birdies Tuesday to raise her tournament total to 13. The 13 birdies are tied for second among the 108-player field which includes some of the nation's top individuals.
With her effort, Larkins climbed 36 spots up the individual leaderboard and is tied of 22nd overall at -2 (142). She played her opening nine, the courses closing holes, at -3 (33), including back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12. She also added back-to-back birdies on holes two and three on her backstretch.
With her second round of -2 (70), sophomore Ashley Kirkland also made a big charge up the leaderboard, climbing 24 spots into a tie for 26th at -1 (143). Her Tuesday scorecard included four birdies, doubling her tournament total to eight.
"Ashley also played another very solid round," Andry added. "I love what we're getting from the top of our lineup. I'm excited to see how we can finish this tournament off tomorrow!"
Kirkland closed both her nines with sixth straight holes of par-or-better, including finishing her day with birdie on the par 3, 155-yard ninth.
Junior Sophie Korthuijs finished her second tour of the Fazio Course with four birdies and eight pars, including playing a 10-hole stretch (hole 13 through hole 4) at four-under. The effort helped her climb eight spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 78th.
Rounding out Ball State's countable scores was a +8 (80) from sophomore Skylar Dean, which included her third birdie of the tournament on the par 4, 338-yard eighth hole.
