Women's Golf Off To Solid Start at Golfweek Red Sky Classic

WOLCOTT, Colo. - - The Ball State women's golf team opened play in the Golfweek Red Sky Classic with a solid performance Monday, turning in the program's lowest round in three trips to the Fazio Course at the Red Sky Golf Club.
Led by rounds of +1 (71) from sophomore Ashley Kirkland and +2 (72) from freshman Taylor Larkins, the Cardinals shot +12 (300) as a team. The effort places Ball State 17th among the highly talented 20-team field which includes 11 teams currently ranked in the top 100 nationally according to thedifferentialranking.com.
Southern Cal leads the event after turning in the lowest team round in Golfweek Red Sky Classic history at -22 (266). Miami (Fla.) is second at -11 (277), while the Cardinals are currenlty 13 strokes out of 10th place.
Prior to today's effort, the lowest round Ball State had posted on the 6383-yard course was a +13 (301) to close play in the 2023-24 Red Sky Classic (Sept. 25-27, 2023). The Cardinals also competed on the course during the 2013-14 season, at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 23-25, 2013).
In her run to Monday's one-over round, Kirkland carded four birdies and nine pars. She played her final nine holes, the course's front nine, at even par to finish the day tied for 50th among the 108-player field.
Larkins also played her final nine at even par, rebounding from a rough bounce on the par 5, 557-yard second to card four birdies over her next five holes. She would finish the day with six total birdies and in a tie for 58th place.
The Cardinals opening-round effort also counted an +4 (76) from freshman Elizabeth Coleman and a +5 (77) from sophomore Sophie Korthuijs. Coleman's round included 13 pars and one birdie, while Korthuijs collected 11 pars and a pair of birdies. Both golfers, along with Kirkland, recorded birdies on hole 2.
Rounding out Ball State's effort was a +6 (78) from sophomore Skylar Dean whose day included nine pars and two birdies.
Tuesday's second round will see the Cardinals once again tee off on hole 10 starting at 11:12 a.m. MDT.
