Women’s Golf Leads After Day 1 of Brittany Kelly Classic

YORKTOWN, Ind. - - The Ball State women's golf team has five players in the top 10 and hold a nine-stroke lead as a team after the first two rounds of the Brittany Kelly Classic at The Players Club at Woodland Trails.
The Cardinals held a three-stroke lead after shooting +6 (294) in the opening round, then followed with a -5 (283) in the second to tie the second-lowest 18-hole team score in the now 24-year history of the event.
Ball State's +1 (577) score is currently nine strokes ahead second place Morehead State which shot +10 (586) on the day. Overall, there are 14 teams competing for the tournament title.
Freshman Taylor Larkins provided Ball State's lowest round Monday, shooting -4 (68) to lead the Cardinals charge over the second 18. She was not the only BSU golfer to go sub-par in the second round, however, as she was joined by junior Sophie Korthuijs at -2 (70), freshman Elizabeth Coleman at -1 (71) and senior JJ Gregston at -1 (71).
Throw in even-par rounds of 72 by Coleman and Gregston over the first tour of the 6,294-yard course and the pair are currently tied for third overall at -1 (141).
Larkins is currently tied for sixth overall at E (144), after shooting +4 (76) in her opening round. Also, in the top 10 among the 91-player field for Ball State are Korthuijs in eighth at +1 (145) and senior Jenna Estravillo who is tied for ninth at +3 (147), including shooting E (72) in her second round.
Estravillo is currently tied for second among the field in par 3 average at -1 (2.83), along with sophomore Skylar Dean. Gregston is tied for second in par 5 average at -2 (4.67), while Larkins is tied for fifth in par 4 average at E (4.00).
Ball State is second among the field in total birdies, at 28, including eight apiece from Coleman and Gregston. Korthuijs has one of the six eagles over the first 36 holes of competition, holing out on her third shot on the par 5, 435-yard 15th.
Play in the Brittany Kelly Classic concludes Tuesday with the final round starting at 9 a.m. back at The Players Club.
