HAMILTON, Ohio - The Ball State women's tennis team (9-8, 2-4 MAC) dropped a hard fought 4-3 battle to rival Miami University (8-8, 7-0 MAC) Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Athletic Club.
The Cardinals opened the competition on a high note winning the doubles point over the RedHawks. Ella Hazelbaker alongside partner Elena Malykh were the first to exit the court as the duo earned a 6-3 take down over Nishitha Saravanan and Lauren Joyce at No. 3 doubles. Shortly after, Isabel Tanjuatco paired up with Sarah Shahbaz on court No. 2 defeating Catherine Denysiewicz-Slowek and Manu Oliveira by a 6-2 decision to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Miami won in straight sets at the top two singles positions and on court No. 5 simultaneously to take the 3-1 advantage over Ball State. Chloe Brown gave BSU a glimmer of hope as she beat Miami's No. 3 singles player Saravanan in three frames, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
It was looking promising for the Fighting Cardinals as Hazelbaker tied the match up 3-3 for the Cardinals winning her competition by a score of 7-5, 7-5 over Sarah Dev at the No. 6 slot.
The deciding point came down to the No. 5 singles position which saw Alana Bristow put up a hard-fought battle but unfortunately came up short despite the strong effort.
The Ball State women's tennis team will be back in action Friday at home when the Cardinals host Bowling Green at 1 pm ET at the Foster Adams Family Tennis Complex and Bill Richards Tennis Courts. If inclement were to occur the match will be moved indoors to the Ball State Tennis Facility.
