CLEVELAND - - For her play at last weekend's Rio Verde Invitational, Ball State women's golf freshman Sophie Korthuijs has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Golfer of the Week.
A first-time league award winner, Korthuijs was the top MAC golfer at the three-day event, tying for fourth overall among the 104-player field with a 54-hole score of -1 (215). With 34 league golfers at the event, Korthuijs turned in the best three rounds of her collegiate career, starting with a career-low -2 (70) in the opening round.
After going +2 (74) in her second round, she closed with a -1 (71) to be one of just seven players in the event to turn in multiple sub-par rounds.
In addition, Korthuijs tied for fifth among the field with a par 4 average of 3.92 (-2), while tying for fifth on the par 5s with a 4.80 (-3) average. One of just six players to card an eagle over the course of the tournament, Korthuijs also recorded seven total birdies and 37 total pars in her three days on the White Wing Course at Rio Verde CC.
Korthuijs and the rest of the Ball State women's golf team return to action next week at the Puerto Rico Shootout hosted by the Cardinals. After a practice round Monday, the teams will play 18-hole rounds on three consecutive days on the Flamboyan Course at the Wyndham Palmas Golf & Beach Resort.
