January 08, 2025 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's basketball team (11-4, 3-0 MAC) remained undefeated in Mid-American Conference action after defeating Eastern Michigan (1-12, 0-3 MAC) by a score of 101-69 Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
Ball State placed four Cardinals in double figures with senior Alex Richard leading the way with a double-double after tallying 21 points and 10 rebounds. Elise Stuck chipped in 17 points, while senior Ally Becki had 15. Rounding out the double figure scoring was Marie Kiefer, she too registered a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds.
The all-around team offensive success also had a lot to do with team's unselfishness tonight, which was apparent as the Cardinals dished out 25 assists, with Lachelle Austin leading the charge with 11.
The Cardinals started the game off strong outpacing the Eagles 27-13 in the opening 10 minutes of play. Ball State shot 61 percent (11-18) from the field in the first stanza which was led by this week's MAC Player of the Week Ally Becki who finished the first quarter of play with seven points.
By the 5:20 mark of the second frame, the Eagles had turned the page outscoring the Cardinals 14-10 to make it a 37-27 ball game. Richard and Becki had back-to-back fast break layups to push Ball State's cushion back up to 14 (41-27). But Eastern Michigan wasn't going to go away lightly and made Ball State continue to work hard on defense. Luckily for BSU, the Cardinals remained in control and would take a 48-34 lead over the Eagles at the break.
After intermission, it was not much of a contest anymore, as the Cardinals continued to dominate the floor both offensively and defensively. The Cardinals extended their lead to 68-34 after going on a 19-0 scoring spree which was sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from Stuck and Richard. The Cardinals would eventually take a 76-45 advantage over the Eagles into the last 10 minutes of action.
The fourth quarter mimicked the previous ones, and the Eagles could not catch up to the Cardinals no matter how hard they tried. The fourth period was highlighted by a layup from Hailey Smith with :06 seconds left in the game for the Cardinals 101th point that would also put the exclamation point on today's victory.
