BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - Eight players logged at least one kill and 11 earned at least one dig Friday afternoon, helping the Ball State women's volleyball team open play in the Indiana Invitational with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-18) victory over Chicago State.
Â
"I was impressed with our overall team energy and consistency," head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. "Chicago State hit a lot of creative shots and served tough, so we had to stay locked in at all times. I thought everyone did that well."
Â
In picking up its third win of the season via the sweep, the Cardinals (4-3) used a complete team effort with 16 different student-athletes seeing time on the court. Combined, they helped Ball State hit .276 as a team, while limiting the Cougars (2-5) to a .102 rate of success.
Â
"It was nice to be able to get everyone some good experience today, which will help us in the long run,"Â Â Phillips added. "We played consistent and focused from start to finish."
Â
On the offensive front, graduate middle Aayinde Smith led Ball State with eight kills, while also turning in another solid effort at the net with a match-high five total blocks. Smith has a team-leading 24 total blocks so far this season, while averaging 1.09 blocks per set.
