MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State Athletics continued to excel in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) with a score of 992 for the 2022-23 season, the NCAA announced Tuesday. That score matches the department's all-time single-year high of 992 accomplished following the 2020-21 year.
"Ball State student-athletes continue to display excellence in the classroom," Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell said. "Our coaches and staff vigilantly promote student-athlete academic achievement at every turn. At Ball State, we trumpet the student-athlete experience which includes scholastic and athletic success."
The APR, created to provide more of a real-time measurement of academic success than graduation rates offer, is a team-based metric in which scholarship student-athletes earn one point each term for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Schools that don't offer scholarships track their recruited student-athletes.
Thirteen Ball State teams earned perfect scores of 1,000 for the 2022-23 year, including baseball, men's basketball, men's golf, men's swimming & diving, women's cross country, field hockey, women's golf, women's gymnastics, softball, women's soccer, women's tennis, women's track and women's volleyball.
The Cardinals' 992 single-year rate for 2022-23 eclipsed average rates reported for all Division I schools (987), all FBS institutions (987) and others programs in the Mid-American Conference (984).
In addition, six Ball State teams posted perfect scores of 1,000 for their multiyear rate which encompasses the four-year range from 2019-20 through 2022-23. Those six teams include baseball, men's golf, women's cross country, women's golf, women's soccer and women's track.
Ball State posted an overall multiyear rate of 990. The nationwide APR multiyear average was 984. Overall, 14 of Ball State's 18 teams (indoor and outdoor track combined as one) logged multiyear scores that exceeded the national average in their sport.
