April 19, 2024 | Women's Tennis
DEKALB, Ill. - The Ball State women's tennis team's comeback fell short on the road Friday to Northern Illinois as the Cardinals suffered a 4-3 loss to the Huskies at the Nelson Tennis Center.
Northern Illinois managed to take the doubles point from Ball State after earning victories on courts two and three. Despite the loss, the top court of Isabelle Tanjuatco and Sarah Shahbaz took down the Huskies' twosome of Diana Lukyanova and Isabella Righi, 6-4.
In singles, Annika Planinsek quickly knotted the match for the Cardinals after posting a straight set 6-2, 6-0 defeat over Lukyanova at the No. 1 singles spot. The Huskies would then go up 3-1 after taking courts two and four from the Cardinals.
After that, Elena Malykh came through with a three-set thrill at the No. 3 slot while her teammate Hrehor followed suit after completing her match in straight sets on court No. 5 to tie the score, 3-3.
The deciding point would come down to the No. 6 position which unfortunately saw Ella Hazelbaker lose to Jenna Horne, 7-2, 7-6 (7-4).
The Ball State women's tennis team will close out the Mid-American Conference regular season when it hosts Toledo Sunday at the Foster Adams Family Tennis Center and Bill Richards Tennis Courts, weather permitting. First serve is at 1 pm ET.
