Men's Basketball Suffers Overtime Setback to Western Michigan on Buzzer Beater

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's basketball team fought back from a late 12-point deficit to force overtime, but ultimately fell 78-76 to Western Michigan on a buzzer beater on Saturday afternoon at Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals (14-15, 6-10 Mid-American Conference) dug back from a 60-48 hole with 8:21 to go to force the extra period with the Broncos (11-18, 8-8 MAC), but Western Michigan's Anthony Crump hit a layup on a full length of the court pass as time on the game clock expired to clinch the win for the visitors.
Ball State got 25 points, six assists and three rebounds from Jalin Anderson, including career highs 10 makes and 11 attempts at the free throw line, but the Broncos used advantages on the glass (48-33) and points in the paint (46-20) to pull through.
Basheer Jihad (16 points, seven rebounds), Davion Bailey (14 points, seven rebounds) and Mickey Pearson Jr. (14 points, three rebounds) also scored in double figures for the hosts, who had chances at the end of regulation and overtime to take a last-second lead. Bailey scored 10 points in the final seven minutes of regulation to help the Cardinals tie the game.
The Broncos got 17 points out of JaVaughn Hannah and 14 and six rebounds from Titus Wright, as WMU controlled the interior to the tune of 26 second chance on 19 offensive rebounds.
Ball State shot 36.1 percent (22-61) from the field, including 26.9 percent (7-26) from distance while draining 89.3 percent (25-28) of its free throws. Western Michigan went 45.2 percent (33-73) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-17) on 3-pointers and 66.7 percent (6-9) at the line.
The Cardinals are scheduled to host Kent State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the home finale for the 2023-24 season.
