
Kelly’s Program Record Leads Women’s S&D on Day 3 of MAC Championships

ATHENS, Ohio - - Led by a record-setting performance from sophomore Payton Kelly, Ball State scored 75 more points on the third day of the 2024 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Friday evening at the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
Kelly completed her collection of program records in the freestyle sprints in the third event of the finals, taking fourth overall in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.61. It was over half a second faster than the previous program mark of 1:48.13 set by now-senior Marcella Ribeiro at the 2021 league meet.
Kelly also owns the program records in the 50 freestyle (22.32) and the 100 freestyle (49.12), both set earlier this year.
Overall, the Cardinals had a student-athlete qualify for either the A or B finals of every event on the day.
Junior Hannah Jones was the first, taking 15th in the 100 butterfly at 56.10. She also placed 15th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.57.
Freshman Alexa Von Holtz and sophomore Callie Tuma qualified for night races for the second straight day, taking 12th (4:24.71) and 14th (4:25.49), respectively, in the 400 IM. Tuma's time was the eighth-fastest in program history.
BSU also had a pair of finalists in the 100 breaststroke, led by senior Laura Wright who took fifth overall at 1:01.56. Freshman Julia Ofman would chip in a 14th-place effort at 1:03.83.
Along with Jones' performance, junior Lilia Newkirk would place 12th in the 100 backstroke with the fourth-fastest individual time in the BSU record book at 54.83.
Rounding out Ball State's scored performances on Friday was senior Grace Walker who place ninth on the 3M board with a score of 276.75. Walker entered the B Finals of the event as the 13th seed and improved upon her prelim score by 29.05 points to win the consolation final.
The Cardinals closed the day with Kelly, Jones, sophomore Haley Sakbun and sophomore Kiran Stauffer turning in the third-best time in program history in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:32.66. The effort earned the Cardinals sixth place.
With Friday's 75 points, the Cardinals remain fifth among the eight-team field with a score of 212. Akron leads the event at 548.5.
Action in the 2024 MAC Championships concludes Saturday with five more individual swimming events, finals of 3-meter diving, and the 400 freestyle relay. Prelims start at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
