WASHINGTON, DC - - It was one of those nights were nearly everything went right for the Ball State gymnastics team as it scored a 197.425 to 196.250 victory at George Washington Friday night at the Charles E. Smith Center.
The Cardinals' (11-2) final score of 197.425 was the second-best effort in program history and included seven routines of 9.900-or-better.
Â
"I love being able to come out and watch them do gymnastics in a place where they are having fun and being focused," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "It's exciting to be able to watch this type of performance and know they can recover when someone doesn't have a great routine. They stayed focused on what they were doing from the very beginning until the very end. It was a great practice for us."
Â
The biggest individual score of the night came from senior Suki Pfister who landed a 9.975 to take the win on vault. The effort included a 10.00 from the head judge.
Â
However, even more impressive was the performance of BSU's quartet of all-arounders with all four scoring at least a 49.400. That included all four of them, graduate Megan Teter, senior Hannah Ruthberg, senior Victoria Henry and sophomore Zoe Middleton tying for the win on floor at 9.925.
Â
"Those four did awesome," Saleem added about the all-around performers. "They took all the things we talked about this week in the gym and just came out here and did Ball State gymnastics. It was fun to watch."
Â
Henry would win the all-around competition with a career-best score of 49.475, while Ruthberg came in second with a career-best 49.425. Middleton and Teter were right behind, tying for third at 49.400.
Â
The Cardinals started the meet on fire, tying the second-best bars team total in program history at 49.325. The effort was led by a score of 9.950 for freshman Ashley Szymanski who would claim the victory on bars for the fourth time in her debut season.
Â
In the second rotation, the Cardinals turned in the second-best team vault score in program history at 49.350. In addition to Pfister's 9.975, Henry collected a score of 9.950.
Â
Over on floor, Ball State's four scores of 9.925 helped the team earn the second-best team score in program history at 49.575. The effort also included a 9.875 from Pfister.
Â
In the final rotation, Teter led the way, tying for second overall at 9.875. In addition, all five countable scores came in at 9.800-or-higher giving the team an event score of 49.175 for the sixth-best mark in the Ball State record book.
Â
Overall, Ball State's student-athletes earned 19 scores of 9.800-or-higher on the night.
Â
Up next for the Cardinals is the Penn State Quad which takes place next Friday (March 1) and will also feature Towson and West Virginia.
