MUNCIE, Ind. – Sparked by over a thousand dollars in donations raised by the Ball State softball team, Ball State student-athletes combined to contribute $3,657.83 in donations to Muncie Mission, as part of the organization's annual Walk A Mile in My Shoes event.
In what was the 20th anniversary of the event, it was the first time Ball State student-athletes have joined forces to contribute. As part of an initiative by Cardinals' Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), 16 of 19 Ball State sports teams had active registrations in the event designed to raise funds and awareness for those in need in the Muncie community.
On a frigid Saturday morning in which athletes with eight Cardinals sports teams (including softball) were traveling for competition, over 80 student-athletes represented SAAC and Ball State athletics on the mile-long walk along Walnut Street, from Muncie Fieldhouse to Muncie Mission.
"I'm incredibly proud of SAAC and our student athletes for leading the charge in this important community service initiative," said Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Ryne Hillenberg, who oversees the SAAC council. "Muncie supports our teams night after night, and it's exciting to see our athletes eager to give back. It's a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we come together as a department to support those in need."
Muncie Mission's stated goal of $120,000 in donations was eclipsed, reaching over $130,000. While the softball team won a SAAC competition with the largest contribution, other top student-athlete contributors included over $700 raised by the men's and women's swim and dive teams, and over $400 each from field hockey, golf and track & field student-athletes.
