September 09, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
DAYTON, Ohio - - It was a rough day for the Ball State women's volleyball team which closed play in the Dayton Invitational with loses to UIC and host Dayton Saturday at the Frericks Center.
The Cardinals (2-7) got off to a hot start in its early match versus the Flames (7-3), hitting .362 (29-4-69) to split the opening two sets. Unfortunately, the UIC defense picked up the pace over the final to sets to hand BSU a 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23) setback.
Sophomore opposite Madison Buckley led the Ball State offense in the opener, tying her career high with 14 kills. Fifth-year middle Marie Plitt was not far behind with 12, to go along with a .400 (12-2-400) attacking mark.
Senior setter Megan Wielonski added her fifth double-double of the season with 40 assists and a team-high 13 digs, while becoming just the seventh player in program history to eclipse 3,000 career assists. Add in 15 more assists in the nightcap versus the Flyers (8-2) and Wielonski's career total currently stands at 3,054.
Wielonski also tied for match-high honors with three aces versus UIC, as did sophomore defensive specialist Paige Busick.
Rounding out Ball State's top performers in the opener were fifth-year libero Havyn Gates with 12 digs, sophomore outside Katie Egenolf with seven kills and 10 digs, senior outside Cait Snyder with nine kill and redshirt freshman Aniya Kennedy with seven kills and four total blocks.
