Baseball Welcomes Assistant Coach Nick Caruso

MUNCIE, Ind - - Head coach Rich Maloney and the Ball State baseball program are excited to welcome former professional player and coach Nick Caruso to its staff as an assistant coach.

"We are excited to have Nick Caruso join our staff," Maloney said. "Not only does he have collegiate playing experience from Youngstown State and Macomb Community College, but he also played in the USPBL Independent League. Nick will be responsible for developing our catchers, coaching first base, pitching in batting practice, and assisting with our scouting reports. He comes highly recommended, and we are thrilled he has joined our Ball State Baseball Family!"Â

The Sterling Heights, Michigan, native most recently worked with the United Shore Professional Baseball League as assistant manager and developmental coach for the Utica Unicorns beginning in April 2023.

"I am extremely blessed to have the opportunity to join the Ball State baseball coaching staff," Caruso said. "Being able to learn and grow under Coach Maloney will be instrumental in my young coaching career. I couldn't be more excited to compete for a MAC Championship and much more. Go Cardinals!"

Before coaching in the USPBL, Caruso spent two seasons playing in the league for the Westside Woolly Mammoths. He signed with the team in 2021 as a catcher and utility player. As a Woolly Mammoth, Caruso made the 2021 and 2022 USPBL All-Star Teams. His best season was 2022, when he recorded 26 hits and 18 RBIs.

Alongside his position with the Unicorns, Caruso was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Macomb Community College beginning in August of 2021. In his three seasons working for the Monarchs, Caruso helped create a winning environment and was instrumental in scouting opponents.

A home clubhouse assistant for the Detroit Tigers from April 2015 to August 2020, Caruso is a two-time graduate of Youngstown State University, where he enjoyed a four-year career. He earned his bachelor's in communication studies in 2020 and his master's in professional communication in 2021.

In his final season playing for the Penguins in 2021, Caruso produced a .310 batting average, with 31 RBIs and 44 hits. He was a two-time Horizon League All-Academic Team selection and a two-time career Horizon League Batter of the Week.Â

Before his Youngstown State career, Caruso played two seasons for Macomb Community College. He was a two-time MCCAA Eastern Conference Honorable Mention and two-time team Defensive Player of the Year.
