"Dancing Charlie" Cardinal Logo to Take Center Stage at Scheumann Stadium
August 15, 2023 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – Long revered as the Ball State Athletics logo from the 1960s until variations of the current Cardinal head became the official Ball State sports logo, the full-bodied "Dancing Charlie" logo will take its place at midfield on the Scheumann Stadium turf for the 2023 football season.
Turf transformation from the Cardinal head to Dancing Charlie began on Sunday. Completion of the new logo sewn into the SprintTurf surface is expected early this week.
It marks the first time any logo besides variations of the Cardinal head has been used on the football stadium's artificial surface. The stadium briefly used an artificial surface in the 1990s, after the Cardinal head with three upright feathers was introduced as Ball State's official athletics logo in 1990. Major renovations including a FieldTurf playing surface took place in 2007 when the venue was renamed as John B. and June M. Scheumann Stadium, following a gift by the late former Ball State football player and his wife.
The latest version of the Cardinal head logo has been in place as the midfield logo since 2015 when the existing SprintTurf was installed.
"Dancing Charlie represents the energy, excitement and enthusiasm that is indicative of our Cardinal spirit," said Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell. "We are proud of the legacy of Dancing Charlie and are excited about incorporating tradition as we grow Ball State athletics."
While not the official representation of Ball State Athletics, the Dancing Charlie logo is recognized as the primary logo on each of Ball State's black and white football helmets. The logo debuted on Ball State helmets as an alternate logo on Dec. 5, 2020, when the Cardinals beat Central Michigan on the road, a week before clinching their most recent Mid-American Conference championship.
