Men’s Tennis Drops Hard Fought Battle to WMU at MAC Tourney
April 22, 2023 | Men's Tennis
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - It was a highly competitive match between rivals Ball State and Western Michigan at the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals Saturday afternoon at West Hills Athletic Club. Unfortunately, the three-seeded Cardinals would end their season with a 4-0 loss to the second-seeded Broncos.
The doubles point could've gone either way today as both Ball State and Western Michigan had each knotted play 1-1. The Cardinals' Vince Orlando and Eli Herran tallied a 6-4 decision over the Broncos' No. 2 doubles tandem of Peter Kuszynski and Anton Arzhankin while WMU took the win on court three.
With one court remaining, and the first point of the match on the line, Ball State's Nathaniel Webster and Danilo Kovacevic were going head-to-head against WMU's Fynn Lohse and Arjun Honnappa. Just as the Cardinals could taste victory on the top court, Webster sustained an injury causing him to barely walk but he played through it and came back to the court after taking an injury timeout. The Broncos would then finish the match with a 7-5 defeat to claim the doubles point.
With Webster out at the No. 1 singles position, the Cardinals lineup all moved up a spot. Although, Ball State continued to fight the good fight the Broncos would earn wins on courts four, five and six in singles play for today's victory.
