
Men's S&D Earns Three Medals On Day 2 Of MAC Championships

OXFORD, Ohio - - Ball State started out hot on day two of the Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, carrying over the momentum from Wednesday's championship performance.
The first highlight came in the 50 freestyle preliminaries where the Cardinals had three swimmers qualify for the championship heat.Â

The current record holder, senior Owen Chaye, placed third clocking in at 20.03 and was followed closely behind by senior Jack Wolfred who finished fourth touching at 20.18. Wolfred's time ended the day as the third fastest in program history. Junior Joey Garberick grabbed the last spot in the championship heat with his eighth-place finish (20.44).Â
In the 50 freestyle finals Chaye picked up Ball State's first medal of the evening with a third-place finish at 19.89. Chaye's time also set a new program record for the Cardinals.Â

Garberick finished closely behind in fourth re-taking the second fastest time in program history at 20.17.Â

Wolfred finished seventh at 20.23 and freshman Jacob Siewers finished 14th with a new career best and the ninth-fastest effort in program history.Â

Junior Zach Zishka also added his name to the record book with a career-best 4:35.44 in the 500 freestyle finals for the ninth fastest time in program history.Â

In the diving well, freshman Porter Brovont earned Ball State its second medal of the night with a runner-up finish in the 1M diving finals. Brovont's score of 303.65 is a new career high and the 10th best in program history. Junior Issac Hunter finished seventh scoring 263.70.Â

In Wednesday's last event, Ball State broke another program record on the way to winning its third medal of the night. In the 200 freestyle relay, the quartet of Chaye, Garberick, Siewers, and Wolfred finished second at 1:19.35.Â

After two days, the Cardinals are currently third among the seven-team field with 187 points. Miami is first overall at 289.  Action at the MAC Championships resumes Friday, with five individual swimming events, 3-meter diving, and the 400 medley relay.  Preliminaries for the 100 butterfly will start at 10:30am and will be followed by the 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 100 backstroke.Â
