March 19, 2023 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team completed a 5-2 comeback after dropping the doubles point to Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon at the Northwest YMCA.
The Cardinals handed the Huskies their first Mid-American Conference loss of the season improving their overall record to 9-6 and 1-2 in conference action while Northern Illinois drops to 11-5 and 3-1 in league play.
The doubles point could have gone either way as Ball State's top duo of Nathaniel Webster and Danilo Kovacevic captured a 6-4 defeat against NIU's Cheng En Tsai and Mikael Vollbach. The Huskies then evened doubles play after taking court No. 2 from the Cardinals. The point would then come down to the No. 3 slot of Parrish Simmons and Jacks Lancaster who were in a heated tiebreaker versus Iker Gaztambide and Christopher Norlin, but unfortunately would fall to the Huskies duo 7-6.
In singles, Ball State had taken first frames on five of the six courts. Eli Herran breezed past Gaztambide 6-0, 6-2 at position No. 4 to knot the match, 1-1. Vince Orlando followed suit with a three-set thriller on court two which gave BSU the 2-1 edge over NIU.
On the top court, Webster extended the Cardinals lead to 3-1 after registering a 7-6, 6-4 victory versus NIU's top player Oliver Valentinsson. Danilo Kovacevic then clinched match point on court No. 3 to give Ball State the win over Northern Illinois.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference play when it travels to Binghamton Friday for a 1 pm ET first serve.
