Cardinals Drop Matchup with Eagles

YPISLANTI, Mich. – The Ball State men's basketball team was back on the court for a Mid-American Conference matchup with Eastern Michigan on Saturday. Demarius Jacobs led the Cardinals with 19 points, but BSU fell to EMU 75-68.
Ball State fell to 20-9 overall and 11-5 in MAC play, while Eastern Michigan improved to 8-21 overall and 5-11 in league games.
Jacobs led BSU with 19 points, five assists, and four steals. He was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and added four rebounds. Jaylin Sellers chipped in with 14 points, three rebounds, and one assist. Mickey Pearson Jr. finished with 12 points, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Basheer Jihad led the Cardinals with eight rebounds to go along with nine points and a team-high two blocks.
The Cardinals opened the game on a 10-6 run. The next 5:06 was a back-and-forth battle as the teams traded baskets. Ball State held a 17-15 lead with 10:46 left in the opening half.
After EMU cut the BSU lead to 21-18, Ball State went on a 10-4 run and gained a 31-22 lead with 2:10 left in the half. The Cardinals closed out the half by outscoring the Eagles 6-5 as Ball State took a 37-27 lead into the break.
The Eagles opened the second half on a 15-6 run and pulled within one, 43-42, with 14:45 left in regulation. The two squads continued to battle for the next 5:03 as the game would be tied 54-54, with 9:42 left on the clock.
EMU was able to go on an 8-1 run and took a 62-55 lead. The Cardinals were resilient and answered with a 9-2 run, which tied the game at 64-64 with 4:57 left on the clock. Eastern Michigan went on an 11-4 run to close out the game and claim a 75-68 win.
Emoni Bates posted a game-high 24 points along with a game-high 11 rebounds on his way to a double-double. He added an assist and a steal. Tyson Acuff produced a 20-point performance to go along with a team-high three assists and two steals. Colin Golson closed out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.
Ball State travels to Akron for its final road game of the 2022-23 season. The Cardinals and Zips are slated for a 7 p.m. tip on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
