Women’s S&D Earns Three More Wins on Day 2 of House of Champions
November 17, 2023 | Women's Swimming and Diving
INDIANAPOLIS - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving program chalked up three more event wins Friday, raising its two-day total to six in the House of Champions invitational held at the IUPUI Natatorium.
While the Cardinals were unable to add to its program record haul, after claiming two yesterday, there were still plenty of near record-setting performances.
The first came from a familiar face, as freshman Alexa Von Holtz clocked in at 4:21.75 to win the 400 IM. It was the second-fastest individual time in program history in the event and helped her sweep the IM races after her program-record time of 2:00.85 in last night's 200 IM victory.
Sophomore sensation Payton Kelly followed with a brilliant performance of her own, taking second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.24, the second-fastest individual effort in the Ball State record book. It follows her record-setting win in last night's 50 freestyle in which she boasted an NCAA "B" Standard of 22.32.
Kelly would also swim anchor for the first-place 200 medley relay with opened Friday's night session with a seventh-fastest effort in program history at 1:41.65. She was joined by junior Lilia Newkirk, senior Laura Wright and junior Hannah Jones.
The Cardinals also closed the meet with a win in the 800 freestyle relay as sophomore Kiran Stauffer, sophomore Haley Sakbun, Von Holtz and freshman Kayla Newman clocked in at 7:26.09. It's the third-fastest mark in program history.
Wright would also take second in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.49), while Jones led the Cardinals to the touch pad in the 100 butterfly (55.75).
In the diving well, senior Grace Walker place fifth overall on the 1M board with a six-dive final round score of 249.45.
With solid efforts over eight events contested Friday, including a total of 12 top 10 performances, the Cardinals climbed to first overall among the 13 scored teams with 765 points. Arkansas-Little Rock (631) is second, followed by Milwaukee (617.5).
Action in the House of Champions invitational concludes Saturday, with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
